The History

The Morning Star, located in Pottinger’s Entry in central Belfast, dates back to around 1810 when it served as a coaching stop for the Belfast–Dublin mail service. Its name is said to come from postal workers who stopped there at dawn. By the late 19th century, it was transformed into a Victorian-style public house by Henry McKenna and James McEntee, featuring ornate glass and pilastered façades. After surviving an arson attack in 1924 and the Belfast Blitz in 1941, the pub continued to thrive. Since the late 1980s, it has been run by the McAlister family, known for promoting local produce and farm-to-fork dining. Today, The Morning Star remains one of Belfast’s oldest pubs, blending historic charm with modern hospitality.
